Job Description:  

L3Harris is seeking a highly skilled and dynamic senior Mechanical Engineer to perform design, development and analysis tasks which may include complex precision mechanical components and/or support equipment in a program team environment. The Scientist, Mechanical Engineer will provide program support and technical leadership over requirements definition, concept generation, material selection, trade studies, design sensitivity/optimization studies, preliminary and final design, design documentation, manufacturing, and assembly/integration and testing. Candidate must have strong proficiency in 3D modeling, design for manufacturing, mechanical analysis and ability to work independently or within a multi-disciplined team environment.

 

Role entails responsibility for improving upon existing processes or establishing new systems using significant conceptualizing, reasoning and interpretation, developing and championing new concepts or technologies, complex problem solving and innovation requiring broad-based consideration of variables that impact multiple functions and/or businesses, extensively analyzing problems to seek understanding of the root cause of the problem & recommending tactics and strategies that directly impact the achievement of overall business or functional results, and communicating within and outside of the organization to influence leadership to accept new practices, approaches, and concepts.

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Responsible for establishing key performance error budgets.
  • Designs strain-free mounted mirror assemblies.
  • Creates and releases mirror component and mounted mirror drawings.
  • Leverages high reliability, flight-proven, heritage design concepts in order to produce high quality novel designs within an aggressive timeline.
  • Generates test plans and define requirements for support equipment.
  • Defines and establishes the technical approach to meet assigned objective.
  • Directs, coordinates and provides assistance to engineering team in order to meet assigned objectives.
  • Prepares reports, formal documentation and presentation materials summarizing analysis results and present results to both external and internal groups, including leadership and customers.
  • Participates in and present information for Preliminary Design reviews (PDR), Critical Design Reviews (CDR) and Technical Interchange Meetings (TIM).
  • Interfaces with outside suppliers/customers and other engineering disciplines to drive designs to closure (Structural, Thermal, Electrical, Manufacturing, Performance, Quality, Configuration Management).
  • Presents design details at program reviews to customers and independent reviewers.
  • Develops and performs testing to show proof-of-concept and/or qualification of new designs
  • Supports production operations with design of tooling, test equipment, and assembly aids, strong DfMA skills as required.
  • Provides regular status updates to Program Management and Project Engineers on technical, cost and schedule performance.
  • Works under consultative direction against annual goals and objectives
  • Establish educational and training goals for area of expertise and ensuring those goals are achieved

 

Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related disciplines from an ABET Accredited program and a minimum of 12 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or related disciplines from an ABET Accredited program and a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 16 years of prior related experience.
  • 6+ years in CAD modeling and design tools
  • Prior or current experience with optomechanical engineering
  • Experience leading a multi-disciplinary mechanical engineering team through system requirements, design, analysis, test, hardware build, delivery and launch
  • Professional experience using and/or directing finite element analysis (FEA) is required
  • Professional experience with analysis methods (FEA and hand-calculations) is required
  • Professional experience working with and leading multi-disciplinary mechanical engineering team through system requirements, design, analysis, test, hardware build, delivery and launch
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance

 

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Top Secret SCI/DoD clearance preferred
  • Proficiency in design and 3D modeling of solids, surfaces, and assemblies (primary CAD tool will be CREO)
  • Strong proficiency in design of 2D engineering drawings using geometrical dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 standards
  • Proficiency in analysis FEA tools such as FEMAP, MSC Nastran, ANSYS, Sigfit
  • Proficiency in tolerance stack-up analysis for mechanical designs
  • Experience in leading engineering teams from conceptual through detailed design phases
  • Experience building hardware in a high reliability environment
  • Capable of serving as a design lead and/or integrated product team lead (IPTL), leading and supporting program design reviews (PDR, CDR)
  • Proficiency working with a product data manager (PDM) software, and familiarity with configuration management best practices
  • Training and mentoring of new hires and junior engineering staff members.
  • Understanding of the different materials used in the design of optical assemblies and how to trade material choices
