Job Description:
The Database Software Engineer will support the implementation, maintenance, and optimization of an internal corporate Commecrial Off the Shelf (COTS) Security Information Management System (SIMS). This enterprise-wide solution serves as the system of record for all security functions and programs, including clearance/eligibility, access control, investigations, facility information, and compliance tracking. The DBE will be responsible for database design, script development, system integration, and performance tuning to ensure seamless data flow across security platforms. This role requires expertise in managing databases, writing scripts, and supporting SharePoint sites or any other systems interfacing with SIMS.
Essential Functions:
Database Administration & System Support:
- Design, develop, and maintain the database structure for SIMS, ensuring scalability, security, and high availability.
- Optimize database performance, troubleshoot issues, and ensure data integrity and consistency across the system.
- Implement and enforce security policies for data storage, access controls, and encryption in compliance with government security regulations.
- Manage backups, disaster recovery plans, and database replication for SIMS and related systems.
Script Development & System Integration:
- Develop and maintain SQL scripts, stored procedures, triggers, and functions to support SIMS operations.
- Write automation scripts for data ingestion, extraction, transformation, and reporting.
- Integrate SIMS with SharePoint, HR systems, access control platforms, and other corporate security applications.
- Ensure real-time or scheduled data synchronization between SIMS and external security systems.
Security & Compliance Oversight:
- Implement role-based access controls (RBAC) to protect sensitive security-related data.
- Monitor and audit database activity to detect and prevent unauthorized access or data breaches.
- Support internal and external security audits, compliance checks, and reporting requirements.
- Maintain up-to-date documentation for database schemas, processes, and configurations.
- Able to obtain a Secret Clearance within 45 days of start date.
Performance Optimization & Troubleshooting:
- Monitor database performance metrics, identifying and resolving bottlenecks.
- Implement indexing, partitioning, and query optimization techniques to enhance system efficiency.
- Work with security and IT teams to troubleshoot system connectivity and integration issues.
Collaboration & User Support:
- Work closely with security personnel, IT teams, and stakeholders to understand business requirements and enhance SIMS functionality.
- Provide technical support and training to users and administrators of SIMS.
- Assist in the development of customized dashboards and reports for security program oversight.
Work Environment:
- Remote with some office settings within a classified or controlled facility.
- May require limited travel for security audits, system upgrades, or training.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 6 years prior relevant experience or Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience In lieu of degree, minimum 8 years of prior related experience.
- 5+ years of experience as a Database Administrator (DBA) or Data Engineer.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Expertise in SQL Server, Oracle, or PostgreSQL database management.
- Experience developing and maintaining scripts (SQL, PowerShell, Python, or other scripting languages).
- Strong knowledge of database security principles, access controls, and encryption.
- Experience integrating SharePoint, HR systems, or security platforms with enterprise databases.
- Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and communication skills.
- Familiarity with government Personnel Security processing processes.
- Strong understanding of NISPOM (32 CFR Part 117), DISS, NISS, SWFT, and DCSA security processes.
In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in Colorado State, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Vermont and New York State is $82,500-$153,000. For California, Seattle, Washington D.C., Maryland Greater Washington D.C. area, the city of Denver, Washington State and New York City, the salary range for this role is $94,000-$175,000. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
