Position Summary:
Working from preliminary design information, functional data, and/or CNC/NC program data, produces machined parts required for construction of composite and mechanical assemblies for production, prototypes and pilot production units. Plans methods and sequence of machining, taking into consideration such factors as the characteristics of various composites and metals, the effect of heat treating, warpage, etc. Lays out parts and de-bugs programs for successive machining operations, performs complicated set ups, improvises tooling when standard tooling cannot be utilized, and determines machine speeds and feeds. Must have a high degree of skill in the use of a wide variety of machine tools, machinist's hand tools and precision measuring instruments. May use CNC, NC, and/or conventional machining equipment.
Essential Functions:
• Set up, operate, and maintain 4-axis CNC or live tool Lathe machine to produce complex precision parts to exacting tolerances.
• Strong understanding of CNC programming (e.g., Solid Works, Fusion 360, or similar CAM software.
• Interpret engineering drawings, and CAD/CAM models to ensure proper machining strategies and dimensions. Understanding and application of Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing (GD&T).
• Perform machine setup, including tool selection, fixture mounting, and program verification.
• Inspect parts using precision measurement tools (e.g. micrometers, calipers, etc.) to verify conformance to specifications.
• Troubleshoot and adjust machining processes to improve efficiency and accuracy.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow established safety protocols and standard operating procedures.
• Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams to resolve technical issues and improve machining processes.
• Document job setups and recommend process improvements to reduce setup time and increase repeatability.
Qualifications:
• Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 6 years of prior relevant experience or 2 years post-Secondary/associate’s degree with a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience, an associate’s degree in optical technology or equivalent preferred.
Preferred Additional Skills:
• General understanding of manufacturing and assembly techniques used to fabricate antennas
• General understanding of manufacturing and assembly techniques of composite materials.
• Prior experience in basic Microsoft Office software applications.
• Familiarity with fixturing for irregular parts.
• Experience in the Aerospace or Defense industry.
• Able to write task procedures & processes under Engineering guidance.
