Job Description

The Field Engineer is responsible for the hands-on installation, mechanical integration, configuration, troubleshooting, testing, and sustainment of tactical communication systems supporting military and civilian customers worldwide. This role combines technical expertise, strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving ability, and customer engagement to ensure systems are safely installed, properly integrated, and operating according to mission requirements and customer needs.

Field Engineers frequently operate in dynamic field environments and support a wide range of platforms including tactical vehicles, ships, facilities, towers, shelters, and deployed operational environments. The work requires the ability to work with both electronic systems and the physical equipment that supports them.

This is a hands-on engineering position. Successful candidates must be mechanically inclined and comfortable working with tools, hardware, cabling, mounting systems, equipment racks, brackets, connectors, and other physical components. Candidates should be able to understand how equipment physically fits, mounts, connects, and operates within a larger system and be capable of identifying and correcting mechanical issues encountered during installation or troubleshooting.

The successful candidate is an adaptable, self-motivated professional who can work independently, build trusted customer relationships, and represent the organization with professionalism and accountability. This position requires extensive travel, strong technical and mechanical aptitude, and the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Essential Functions

• Install, configure, integrate, test, troubleshoot, and maintain tactical communications systems and associated equipment.
• Perform hands-on mechanical installation and integration of communication equipment, including mounting, securing, routing, connecting, aligning, and adjusting equipment and associated hardware.
• Use hand tools and basic mechanical tools safely and effectively to install, remove, modify, and maintain equipment.
• Identify and troubleshoot mechanical installation issues such as equipment fit, mounting, alignment, hardware, cable routing, connector access, structural limitations, and physical interference.
• Understand how mechanical, electrical, and electronic components interact as part of an integrated communication system.
• Read and interpret mechanical drawings, installation drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, equipment layouts, and technical documentation.
• Integrate and install communication systems into tactical vehicles, facilities, ships, and other operational platforms.
• Support domestic and international customer deployments and operational field activities.
• Travel frequently in support of customer and program requirements; travel may exceed 50% depending on operational needs.
• Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues in field environments with limited supervision.
• Collaborate with Engineering, Program Managers, and internal stakeholders to develop and implement field plans, procedures, and solutions.
• Provide customer instruction, hands-on training, and operational support as required.
• Maintain accurate documentation including installation records, maintenance activities, service reports, and customer interactions.
• Ensure compliance with safety standards, ESD procedures, and company policies while operating in field environments.
• Obtain and maintain eligibility for a U.S. DoD Secret Security Clearance and comply with customer security requirements.
  
  
  

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
  
  
  

Preferred Additional Skills

• Prior military service or experience supporting military operations strongly preferred.
• Active U.S. security clearance preferred.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with demonstrated experience working on vehicles, ships, equipment, machinery, electrical/mechanical systems, or other complex fielded systems.
• Experience performing hands-on equipment installation, modification, repair, or maintenance using mechanical and electrical hand tools.
• Experience with mechanical integration of equipment into vehicles, racks, shelters, ships, facilities, or other platforms.
• Ability to visualize how equipment will physically fit and function within a platform and identify potential installation challenges before they become problems.
• Experience with drilling, fastening, mounting, routing, securing, aligning, and positioning equipment and associated components.
• Experience working with electrical systems, wiring, electronic components, and technical equipment.
• Familiarity with hand tools, installation techniques, and technical maintenance practices.
• Familiarity with tactical communications systems or RF fundamentals.
• Experience with L3Harris communication systems or similar radio platforms.
• Understanding of networking fundamentals and communications infrastructure.
• Strong troubleshooting mindset and demonstrated problem-solving capability.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical documentation.
• Ability to work independently and effectively in rapidly changing environments.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated customer engagement capability.
• Ability to safely work in physically demanding field environments and adapt to varying customer platforms and operating conditions.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, electronics, communications systems, mechanical integration, electromechanical systems, or related technical fields; equivalent military or technical experience considered.
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and comfort performing hands-on installation and maintenance activities.
• Ability to work confidently with hand tools, hardware, mounting systems, connectors, cabling, and mechanical installation components.
• Ability to understand basic mechanical concepts such as fit, alignment, fastening, mounting, torque, clearance, routing, and equipment positioning.
• Ability to safely disassemble, modify, install, and reassemble equipment and associated components.
• Willingness and ability to travel extensively, including domestic and international assignments.
• Ability to climb towers or willingness to obtain tower climbing certification.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD Secret Security Clearance.

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in New York state is $67,000 - $124,000. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
