Job Description:
We are seeking a dynamic and innovative Engineer to lead the TCOM Rapid Prototyping Group (RPG). The ideal candidate will be responsible for leading the development of quick-turnaround prototypes to support proofs of concept, experimentation with disruptive technologies, product development, and customer demonstrations. This role involves close collaboration with cross-functional teams including product line management (PLM), engineering and sales.
Essential Functions:
- Lead the Rapid Prototyping Group responsible for transforming concepts into tangible prototypes.
- Work closely with PLM, engineering, and sales to establish requirements and design constraints.
- Select appropriate rapid prototyping techniques (e.g., 3D printing, CNC machining, laser cutting) to meet project needs.
- Develop and manage project timelines, ensuring prototypes are delivered on schedule and meet prescribed design criteria.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing requirements and tight deadlines inherent in fast-paced product development.
- Streamline prototyping processes, from concept to final testing, while adhering to safety and legal regulations.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians on the team.
- Collaborate with external vendors and suppliers for specialized prototyping needs or services.
- Conduct testing and validation of prototypes to ensure conformance to performance specifications.
- Oversee the testing and analysis of prototypes to identify design flaws, optimize performance, and inform future iterations
- Document and present prototyping processes, results, and recommendations to stakeholders.
- Balance multi-disciplinary (Mechanical, RF, Digital, and Software) engineering trade-offs to create functional prototypes with user interfacing/experience that evoke customer feedback.
- Meet with and brief customers to gain insight into their capability gaps and needs, in order to support sales and PLM in delivering prototypes to garner feedback and input into product designs and roadmaps.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 12 years of prior related experience. Graduate Degree with a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 16 years of prior related experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in prototyping, product development, or a related field.
- Proven experience in leading a team and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency with rapid prototyping equipment (e.g., 3D printers, CNC mills) and software (e.g., CAD, CAM, Python).
- Strong understanding of various materials used in prototyping and their properties.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively to overcome engineering challenges.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to communicate effectively across teams.
- Detail-oriented with a focus on delivering high-quality prototypes.
- Familiarity with industry standards and best practices in prototyping.
- Willingness and ability to travel as necessary for project planning, execution and demonstrations, as well as customer or B2B engagements.
- Hold a current SECRET U.S. security clearance or be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Experience with Agile development methodologies.
- Knowledge of electronics prototyping and integration.
- Experience with advanced manufacturing techniques (e.g., injection molding, casting).
