Our Space, Superiority and Imaging Division is seeking a highly skilled and dynamic engineering Technical Manager to provide both technical expertise and people leadership to a design and analysis cross-functional engineering team.
The ideal candidate for this role is one who thrives in both technical and managerial arenas. As a Technical Manager, you will oversee and lead design, development and analysis tasks on complex optical telescopes, test and ground support equipment, all within a team environment. This role will provide technical leadership over requirements definition, concept generation, material selection, trade studies, design sensitivity/optimization studies, preliminary and final design, design documentation, manufacturing, and assembly/integration and testing. The role requires strong proficiency in 3D modeling, design for manufacturing, mechanical analysis as well as an ability to work independently or within a multi-disciplined team environment. Prior experience with payload and space vehicle integration and testing is preferred. The role also requires strong knowledge of composite materials, layup and replication process, tooling design and weldment dimensioning and tolerancing.
The technical manager is also responsible for leading experienced professionals by creating workforce and staffing plans to ensure availability of resources necessary to accomplish departmental business results. In this role, you will lead, direct and review the work of direct report(s) who exercise latitude and independence in their assignments. You will also participate in hiring, performance ratings and compensation planning within organization, in accordance with management review and approval and have opportunities to establish mentorships and knowledge transfer plans that align with business needs and skillsets. In general, you will be part of a larger program team dedicated to meeting the customer’s technical, cost and schedule needs.
Essential Functions:
- Lead and support the design of high-precision spaceflight hardware, including composite structures, tooling, fixtures and test equipment
- Provide technical leadership across requirements, concept development, design trades, detailed design, analysis, documentation, integration, and test
- Guide and mentor engineers, allocate resources, improve processes, and support strategic planning
- Lead technical reviews, present designs to customers and reviewers, and coordinate with suppliers and cross-functional teams
- Support manufacturing and production with tooling, fixturing, test equipment, and shop aids
- Contribute to proposals, estimates, schedules, and engineering change activities
- Manage hiring, employee development, performance, and team engagement
- Ensure projects meet customer commitments for cost, schedule, and technical performance
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or related disciplines from an ABET Accredited program and a minimum of 12 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or related disciplines from an ABET Accredited program and a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 16 years of prior related experience.
- Ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance
- CAD design experience
- Professional experience working in aerospace and defense industry
- Professional experience leading multi-disciplinary mechanical engineering teams through system requirements, design, analysis, test, hardware build, delivery and launch
- Prior or current experience in the use of analysis methods (FEA and hand-calculations) is required
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Active U.S. Security Clearance is preferred
- Strong proficiency in design and 3D modeling of solids, surfaces, and assemblies (primary CAD tool will be Creo)
- Proficiency in design of 2D engineering drawings using geometrical dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 standards
- Capable of serving as a design lead and/or integrated product team lead (IPTL), leading and supporting program design reviews (PDR, CDR)
- Proficiency working with a product data manager (PDM) software, and familiarity with configuration management best practices
- Training and mentoring of new hires and junior engineering staff members
In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in Colorado state, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New York state, and Vermont is $126,500.00 - $235,500.00. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
