Job Description:
The Lead Cost Estimator is responsible for estimating labor and material costs for manufacturing and engineering projects based on Requests for Proposal (RFPs) and Requests for Quote (RFQs) from prospective customers. This role requires independent reviewing of customer requirements, ensuring compliance, and developing detailed cost estimates and proposal documentation.
Essential Functions:
The Lead Cost Estimator collaborates with business area personnel, proposal coordinators, engineering teams, and matrixed resources across the organization to support business acquisition and proposal development efforts. Strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate effectively with customers, program management, and senior leadership are essential.
Cost Estimation & Analysis:
- Compute cost estimates for raw materials, labor, and production based on specifications, bills of material, and sample layouts
- Quote cost, delivery schedules, and lead times for materials and services
- Create and maintain cost models and historical cost databases
- Evaluate validity of historical estimates using established business rules
- Analyze labor requirements for engineering designs and production activities
Proposal Development:
- Independently prepare cost proposals, compliance matrices, and supporting documentation
- Collect cost data from functional representatives, subcontractors, and vendors
- Review customer requirements and provide detailed compliance assessments
Collaboration & Communication:
- Interface with internal customers, engineering, program management, and senior leadership
- Explain and interpret operational processes, practices, and procedures across departments
- Provide guidance, coaching, and training to other team members as needed
Process Improvement:
- Contribute to program and project completion with measurable impact on departmental results
- Identify and implement enhancements to systems and processes to improve effectiveness
- Work toward operational targets for assigned programs and projects
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Practical knowledge of cost estimating principles and practices in manufacturing/engineering environments
In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in New York state is $67,000 - $124,000. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
