Job Description:
L3Harris Quality Organization in Rochester, NY is looking for an Optical inspector. We are seeking a detail-oriented Optical Inspector to perform visual and dimensional inspections of high-precision optical components and assemblies. This individual may also be responsible for performing inspections, tests, analyses and/or audits of complex products or processes to include microelectronics, precision mechanical, test equipment and fully integrated systems to ensure quality standards and compliance to customer and regulatory requirements.
Essential Functions:
- Perform detailed inspections of precision optical components and assemblies to verify conformance to specifications and drawings.
- Conduct surface quality assessments using industry standards (e.g., MIL-PRF-13830B).
- Inspect for defects such as scratches, digs, chips, and coating irregularities using eye loupes, microscopes, and other metrology tools.
- Measure critical dimensions using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and other precision instruments.
- Interpret drawings, specifications, and work instructions to validate inspection criteria.
- Document inspection results clearly and accurately; complete final inspection reports as required.
- Create and maintain company quality inspection plans and procedures.
- Maintenance of Quality Management System (QMS) databases.
- Implement Continuous Improvement (CI) activities to enhance the quality system.
- Performs audits of all applicable products from production and records results
- Responsible for performing functions associated with Quality Audit on all manufacturing products.
- Collaborate with manufacturing and engineering teams to communicate quality issues and support root cause investigations.
- Assist in the development and improvement of inspection procedures and protocols.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Maintain inspection equipment and ensure calibration status is current.
Required Qualifications:
- Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 6 years of prior relevant experience or an Associates Degree with a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and ability to perform precise and accurate inspections.
- Proficient in using precision hand tools and optical inspection equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills and ability to document and report findings clearly.
- Ability to lift and move components and inspection fixtures up to 35 pounds
- Experience working in a cleanroom or controlled environment.
- Familiarity with statistical process control (SPC) and other quality improvement methodologies.
- Knowledge of optical coatings, lens fabrication, and assembly processes.
- Knowledge and/or experience with NASA Standards, IPC Certifications, GD&T preferred
- Excellent communication, technical writing and presentation skills
- Ability to travel for source inspections and / or program support depending on program needs.
In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in New York state is $48,000 - $89,000. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
