Job Description:  

 

This position will be responsible for providing Mechanical Engineering support to customer-funded programs and internal research efforts within our Space Superiority and Imaging Division.

 

Strong engineering fundamentals and analytical background with the ability to understand and guide analyses and offer solutions related to mechanical, electro-mechanical, and opto-mechanical systems. Types of analysis include thermal, structural, and dynamic. This position will oversee and lead design, development and analysis tasks on complex hardware which may include glass optical assemblies, composite structures, high precision actuators and mechanisms and support equipment/tooling. Provide support and technical leadership over requirements definition, concept generation, material selection, trade studies, design sensitivity/optimization studies, preliminary and final design, design documentation, manufacturing, and assembly/integration and testing. Candidate must have strong proficiency in 3D modeling, design for manufacturing, mechanical analysis and ability to work independently or within a multi-disciplined team environment.

 

Job duties may include leading small cross-functional teams of engineers and designers in accomplishing the above assignments. Responsibilities may include investigating solutions to product or process problems. Prior experience with payload and space vehicle integration and testing is preferred.

 

Responsible for improving upon existing or establishing new processes and systems using significant conceptualization, reasoning and interpretation. Solutions are innovative and unique and draw upon best practices based on expertise. Develop or champions new concepts or technologies.  May recommend and implement new products, processes, policies, standards or operating plans in support of job function strategy.

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Design for low CTE, strain-free, mounted components and assemblies
  • Design for environmental tests such as modal, acoustic and TVAC
  • Develop component level, assembly and configuration drawings and BOMs
  • Define requirements and generate test plans for flight hardware and support equipment
  • Direct, coordinate and develop objectives for internal program team to meet performance requirements
  • Provide technical direction, as needed, to early/mid-career engineers and other cross-functional team members
  • Use comprehensive information gathering, analysis and investigation to understand and solve problems
  • Leverage high reliability, flight-proven, heritage design concepts to produce high quality designs within a defined cost and schedule scope
  • Complete assigned projects using design guidelines and established engineering standards
  • Prepare reports, formal documentation and presentation materials summarizing design/analysis results and present results to both external and internal customers
  • Strong knowledge and experience with mechanical detailed design and new product development, manufacturing processes, and MCAD modeling tools

 

Qualifications: 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree with 9+ years of relevant experience or Master’s degree with 7+ years of relevant experience.  In lieu of degree, 13 years of mechanical engineering experience.
  • Experience with structural analysis methods (FEA and hand-calculations) is required
  • Experience with ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing standard
  • Experience with CAD software is required, preferably CREO

 

Preferred Additional Skills:

 

  • Top Secret/DoD clearance desired or ability to obtain a clearance with a detailed background check
  • Familiarity with ISO 9000/AS-9100 Quality Management Systems
  • Proficiency working with a product data manager (PDM) software, and familiarity with configuration management best practices 
  • Training and mentoring of new hires and early/mid-career engineering staff is expected

 

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in Colorado state, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New York state, and Vermont is $106,000 - $197,000. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
