Job Description:
Come and join the Aerojet Rocketdyne Redmond Tool Engineering Team as we build the next generation of in-space propulsion rocket engines for cutting-edge spacecraft! As a Tooling Engineer, you will work with our team to design and fabricate tooling and test equipment for both production and development programs. You will produce fully detailed designs and drawing packages that drive procurement and fabrication of Tooling and Test Equipment (T&TE) supporting manufacture of flight hardware. You will provide guidance on assembly, inspection, and delivery of tooling and test equipment to internal customers. You will work directly with Rocket Assembly, Test Lab, Tooling Engineering, Program Management, and Procurement personnel on a daily basis to ensure smooth and efficient fabrication of tooling.
Essential Functions:
- Provide imaginative, thorough and practicable solutions to a wide range of technical problems involving the conventional utilization of tool engineering techniques.
- Conceive and plan projects involving the development of new methods to attain objectives.
- Perform tool design and modification requiring knowledge of production processes, requirements, design concepts and materials.
- Interpret production plans and creates tooling to accomplish contractual or production requirements.
- Coordinates and clarifies engineering and design standards.
- Support procurement of material and components for tooling and test equipment.
- Performs complex stress analyses and advises on structural requirements, machine suitability and method of fabrication.
- Develops complex machine shop tooling, special tooling for production, inspection tooling, test tooling, and handling equipment.
- Observes and evaluates major tool tryouts for design suitability and authorizes deviation and/or tool design changes.
- Follows programs through completion, maintaining liaison with manufacturing, planning and project engineering.
- Maintains an interchange of information with tool suppliers regarding optimum fabrication methods, materials, designs and repairs.
- Prepares design and fabrication cost estimates, schedule of materials and manpower.
- Provides technical guidance to less senior tool engineers and designers.
- Directs tool design and fabrication of special tooling.
- Presents formal tool and design reviews and may include customer interface.
- Maintains budget and schedule for assigned project tool string.
- Provides manpower forecasting for design on assigned project.
- May include cost account management.
- Provides technical support and assistance in manufacturing process planning.
- Provides support to product engineering to attain manufacturability and tooling feasibility.
- May work closely with strategic suppliers in design and fabrication techniques and tool quality acceptance.
- Prepares or updates Program Tooling and Equipment List with input from other functional groups.
- Secondary Duties: Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems (Oracle preferred)
- Proficiency using Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Good problem-solving ability.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- PTC Creo and Unigraphics NX modeling and Drafting Experience.
- Welding, Machining, Drafting, or Electrical Fabrication Experience.
- Pneumatic or Hydraulic Testing Experience.
In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in the state of Washington is $77,500 - $144,500. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
