Job Description:

We are looking for a Lead Mechanical Engineer with expertise in electro-mechanical design to join our team in Redmond, Washington.

The selected candidate is considered a subject matter expert with comprehensive knowledge of the job area and will perform electro-mechanical and mechanical design engineering assignments requiring application of advanced engineering principles, theories and concepts to develop propulsion hardware for spacecraft programs.  Assignment may include acting in a lead role for a team of mechanical design engineers responsible for the design of complex propulsion system hardware.

This position requires highly-refined electro-mechanical and mechanical design skills that will be applied in designing and solving issues in the development and integration of high pressure/power and extreme temperature space hardware such as chemical and electric propulsion systems along with propulsion components such as injectors, reaction chambers, nozzles, cathodes, and magnetic accelerators for liquid rocket engines and electric propulsion thrusters, along with power processing units for electric propulsion thrusters. Working independently at most times while seeking the guidance of other senior staff and subject matter experts when necessary, the candidate will support and produce the innovative designs and design changes necessary to be used in these high pressure/power, extreme environment applications.

Essential Functions:

  • Personally support and lead a team responsible for completion of design tasks that generate electro-mechanical and mechanical design components and their higher level systems for high pressure/power and extreme environment applications. Interpret engineering models and drawings and perform tolerance studies. Evaluate technical input from hardware suppliers and work with cross functional teams on producibility improvements and cost savings. Candidate will participate in trade studies and preliminary designs using 3D CAD modeling software tools (Creo/NX).  Candidate will also support independent peer review of work performed by others on an as-needed basis.
  • Work is guided by individual annual goals and objectives with minimal oversight or direction. Frequently responsible for providing guidance, coaching and training to other employees across the Company within design function. Frequently responsible for managing large, complex project initiatives of strategic importance to the organization, involving large cross-functional teams.
  • Performs or coordinates thermal and structural analysis for predicting component and system level performance in the design of the products. Interacts with manufacturing to assure hardware is producible.  Actively seeks out and communicates opportunities for manufacturability improvements in hardware designs and manufacturing processes.
  • Personally prepares and leads a team responsible for generation of engineering drawings with associated geometric dimensioning and tolerancing in accordance with ASME Y14.5 standards. Actively leads team meetings to assure design content for new or modified engineering designs. Prepares CAD files for team approval and actively manages design release.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations for internal and external customers. Responsible for preparing and/or peer reviewing engineering reports to support tolerance studies, engineering analyses, or failure investigations, including technical close-out reports.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 9 years of prior relevant mechanical engineering experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related mechanical engineering experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related mechanical engineering experience.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.  An advanced degree or coursework toward an advanced degree is a plus.
  • 9+ years of experience in electromechanical or mechanical design, preferably in the aerospace industry.
  • Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5
  • Significant experience using Creo and NX CAD geometry-based modeling.  Experience using the Windchill product lifecycle management system.
  • Well-developed understanding of manufacturing processes (welding, brazing, machining, heat treating).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel and Power Point).
  • Strong mechanical engineering background with knowledge and understanding of fluid flow principles.
  • Experience leading a team of mechanical engineers with such backgrounds
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
  • Well-developed component and system level knowledge of chemical and electric rocket propulsion hardware is desirable.
