Job Description:
By leveraging lean principles, this individual will drive continual improvement initiatives to reduce safety and environmental risk in our processes and identify sustainability opportunities. The EHS Senior Specialist must demonstrate the ability to build trust and confidence with internal customers to influence change through non-obstructive, systemic solutions to EHS challenges.
The EHS Senior Specialist must be an effective communicator and send clear, concise, and consistent messages, both verbally and in writing. This individual must guide operations leaders and site EHS professionals in implementing and sustaining company EHS policies and assist the regional EHS leader in driving segment and corporate EHS objectives.
Essential Functions:
- Integrate EHS&S into all aspects of the business, focusing on the balance between business needs and EHS&S priorities with an understanding of how to identify solutions that address the needs of both.
- Implement all health and safety programs, including industrial hygiene, ergonomics, electrical safety, machine guarding, chemical safety, lockout, overhead hoists, lab safety, powered industrial trucks, fire safety, PPE, emergency preparedness, confined spaces, walking/working surfaces, first aid/CPR/AED, and OSHA records management.
- Implement all environmental programs, including hazardous waste management, wastewater management, stormwater management, air emissions management, and applicable Loudoun County code requirements.
- Implement all sustainability initiatives and coordinate data collection from all projects in which there are sustainability improvement opportunities. Ensure all monthly and quarterly data reporting requirements are met before due dates. Work diligently to identify new sustainability improvements for the site to meet Site, Sector, and Segment goals.
- Manage all interactions with EHS-related regulatory agencies during inspections, inquiries, and other events. Coordinate all communications between regulatory agencies and L3H Corporate Legal for any regulatory issues that arise.
- Control of all explosive materials used at the site in accordance with the DoD Safety requirements of DoD 4145.26-M, DCSA Security requirements of DoD 5100.76-M, DoD Transportation requirements of DoD 4500.9-R, and ATF requirements of 27 CFR 555.
- Oversee injury case management, including implementation of conservative care, early intervention, and ergonomic improvements. Ensure completion of injury and incident investigations with effective corrective and preventative actions to prevent recurrence.
- Work proactively with site leadership to incorporate EHS&S into all elements of the business and meet established improvement targets. Lead initiatives to identify and mitigate potential hazards before they can manifest as an issue. Routinely brief leadership on the health of the EHS&S program, including responses to incidents, the status of Zero Injury Plans, and the status of Sustainability Maturity Plans.
- Focus on continually improving the EHS&S programs at the site within its processes, systems, and procedures.
- Perform all other duties as assigned and maintain flexibility to support off-shift or weekend activities as necessary.
- Work with contractors to ensure effective risk mitigation and job execution, including the implementation of contractor safety oversight programs
- Direct contractors on equipment PMs, maintenance request, inspections in and around the facility; perform/schedule corrective maintenance for items identified during the PM or failures.
- Lead or assist injury and illness investigation activities related to Facilities or EHS to assure effective root cause and corrective actions.
- Develops, coordinates, implements preventative maintenance programs; analyzes and oversees the operation, maintenance, and repair of buildings and equipment
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.
- Ability to obtain/maintain DoD security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Active security clearance (preferred).
- 6+ years of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) experience, including people leadership and successful execution of EHS programs and initiatives.
- Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong interpersonal, collaborative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Proven ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and professionalism in sensitive or high-visibility situations.
- Demonstrated capability to manage competing priorities and drive multiple initiatives forward simultaneously.
