Job Description:

Design, build, and test the photonic devices that enable next-generation sensing and communications. This graduate internship emphasizes experimental work on integrated acousto-optic devices, RF/microwave photonics, distributed fiber sensing, and fiber-optic communications.

Essential Functions:

  • Design and execute experiments to characterize photonic devices, components, and subsystems.
  • Develop measurement methods; collect, assess, and interpret experimental data.
  • Evaluate performance such as optical loss, coupling, bandwidth, modulation response, linearity, noise, or environmental sensitivity.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to integrate and validate mature designs at device, subsystem, and system levels.

Qualifications:

  • To be eligible, candidate's must be pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Materials Science, or a related field.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with waveguide acousto-optic modulators or deflectors, SAW/BAW transducers, RF-drive integration, or acousto-optic mode conversion.
  • Experience with programmable RF/microwave photonic circuits, tunable delay or true-time-delay, microwave photonic filtering, frequency conversion, or low-phase-noise photonic sources.
  • Experience with frequency combs, silicon/silicon-nitride/InP/thin-film lithium-niobate PICs, photonic packaging, or electronic-photonic co-integration.
  • Strong foundation in photonics, device physics, electromagnetics, or related analytical methods.
  • Experimental research, internship, laboratory, or substantial project experience in at least one of: integrated photonics, acousto-optic devices, RF/microwave photonics, distributed fiber sensing, or fiber-optic communications.
