Job Description:

L3Harris has an immediate opening for an Engineering Technician to join our talented team and support our customers. In this hands-on role, you will build, integrate, and test photonic components for larger system assemblies. Ideal candidates have experience building, assembling, or testing precision components and a strong technical foundation in electronics, mechanical systems, optics, or a related field. The ability to interpret and follow technical specifications and work with precision equipment is essential.

Experience interpreting engineering drawings, following detailed procedures, operating machining equipment such as lathes, mills, or CNC machines, or working in laboratory or manufacturing environments can translate well to this role. Photonics experience is a plus, but it is not required. We provide comprehensive on-the-job training to help technicians from other technical disciplines develop photonics-specific skills, including fiber-optic handling, optical alignment, and specialized testing procedures. Bring your technical aptitude and attention to detail—we’ll help you build the skills to succeed.

Essential Functions:

  • Fabricate, assemble, integrate, test, and inspect photonic and mechanical components using detailed work instructions, engineering drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Perform fiber Optical cable connectorization and splicing
  • Perform electronic component removal and replacement using soldering techniques.
  • Integrate commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) optical equipment using architecture block diagrams and wiring diagrams.
  • Assist with equipment calibration and perform preventive maintenance according to documented procedures.
  • Communicate progress to management to support cost, schedule, and quality goals.
  • Maintain a clean, organized workspace and reliable work practices.
  • Apply precision assembly skills and working knowledge of engineering processes and methodologies
  • Work in classified laboratory environments or high‑reliability production environments.

Qualifications:

  • Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience or 2 years post-Secondary/Associates Degree with a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience.
  • Active Top Secret/SCI with Poly clearance

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, specifications, block diagrams, and test configurations.
  • Apply advanced photonics skills, including electro-optic components, optical alignment, and fiber handling.
  • Use precision metrology and optical test equipment, including interferometers, profilometers, and high-magnification microscopes.
  • Support process development, first-article builds, engineering pilots, and prototypes.
  • Perform root-cause analysis, support corrective actions, and improve work instructions, tooling, processes, and fixtures.
  • Maintain digital records using MES, nonconformance systems, JIRA, and digital travelers.
  • Collaborate across engineering, quality, and operations to resolve technical issues and guide junior technicians.
