Job Description:

 L3Harris Technologies is seeking an Environmental Health & Safety Technician to join our team at the Aerojet Rocketdyne Segment’s Orange, VA site. Our site is near Culpeper, VA, in beautiful, rural Orange County (1.5 hours from Washington, DC)!  This site is our center of excellence for Solid Rocket Motor Propulsion and Energetics development as well as high-complexity production programs.

 

The Environmental Health & Safety classifications perform labor tasks related to the disposal, reduction, storage, packaging, and transportation of chemical, industrial wastes, and hazardous materials; maintain inventory and storage of waste and hazardous materials; maintain waste collection and disposal records, including schedules of all shipment of waste; assist in inspections to ensure compliance with the organization’s policies, procedures, regulations and standards related to hazardous sites; assist with testing and servicing equipment and systems; may be required to operate equipment after training; may be required to perform EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) tasks including but not limited to setting up firing lines for explosives and operating high temperature ovens for thermal decontamination; and perform other related tasks as assigned.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Manage hazardous and explosive waste
  • Transport hazardous and explosive waste
  • Store hazardous waste
  • RCRA environmental inspections
  • Make waste determinations based on explosive classification
  • Pull water samples
  • Know the basics of energetic waste and how it reacts with other waste
  • Operate tractor, forklift, hoist, etc.
  • Label and identify hazardous and nonhazardous waste
  • Maintain waste collection and disposal records
  • Assist with testing
  • Prolonged standing, bending, stooping and lifting
  • Conduct site safety and environmental inspections
  • Knowledge in all safety and environmental regulations
  • Identify hazards with energetic waste
  • Assist in air monitoring and testing
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Test electrical leads using a multimeter
  • Maintain equipment and tooling
  • The work environment may require a combination of indoor and outdoor activity (hot, cold, wet, humid conditions) traversing across production floors
  • Ability to transfer up to 50 pounds
  • Operate material handling equipment (forklift, crane, hoist, man lift, etc.)
  • Work around variable noise levels or with fume or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, etc. requiring the use of personal protective equipment such as face protection (safety glasses, goggles, face shield), foot protection (i.e. steel toed shoes, rubber boots, etc.), gloves, hard hat, shop coat and hearing protection
  • Some positions may require Respirator clearance up to and including the Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Level A clearance
  • Drive between various locations within the Company facility or between locations as needed
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills
  • Ability to identify unsafe acts and / or conditions and take the proper steps to eliminate them
  • Knowledge and ability to use basic mathematics

 

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 6 years prior experience, 2 year post-secondary/AA Degree and 2 years prior experience.
