Job Description:

 

L3Harris is seeking a Specialist, Technical Writing, to support the RC-135 Operational Flight Trainer for our location in Offutt AFB, NE. This position is responsible for developing, maintaining, and updating a comprehensive suite of technical documentation that supports the RC-135 Operational Flight Trainers and associated systems. This role requires strong writing skills, attention to detail, and the ability to translate complex technical information into clear, concise, and user-friendly documentation. The ideal candidate possesses foundational knowledge of aircraft or simulator systems—or the strong willingness and aptitude to learn them—and applies that understanding to produce accurate and effective technical materials.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Develop, update, and maintain technical documentation including:
        • Operation & Maintenance (O&M) Manuals.
        • Acceptance Test Procedures (ATP).
        • Instructor’s Utilization Handbook (IUH).
        • System specifications, functional descriptions, user manuals, and special reports.
        • Customer requirements and support documents as required.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, maintenance personnel, and training teams to gather information and verify technical accuracy.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, schematics, change notices, and system data to create or update documentation.
  • Ensure all documentation meets established standards for clarity, format, terminology, and completeness.
  • Support configuration management processes, ensuring documents are properly version-controlled and compliant with customer or regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in reviews of technical content and the ability to run the modified ATP after updates.
  • Research new or updated system functionality to accurately reflect changes within technical documents.
  • Assist in developing document templates, style guides, and process improvements to enhance documentation quality and consistency.
  • Communicate effectively with subject matter experts (SMEs) to confirm understanding and maintain accuracy across all published materials.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree with four (4) years of technical writing and editing experience.
  • Graduate Degree with two (2) years of technical writing and editing experience.
  • In lieu of a degree, a minimum of eight (8) years of technical writing and editing experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance within the first 6 months
  • Must be a US Citizen.

 

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Experience with military or commercial training systems, simulators, or aviation equipment.
  • Familiarity with DoD or aviation documentation standards.
  • Experience working in an environment with strict configuration control.
  • Graphic or visual design skills for creating illustrations, diagrams, or technical figures.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Curiosity and willingness to learn complex technical systems.
  • Practical knowledge of project management and the ability to manage documentation projects or processes with general supervision.
