Title:  Weld Shop Manager

Job Description:

L3Harris is seeking a highly skilled Weld Shop Manager to join our Norfolk, VA team. The ideal candidate will be proficient in both TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) welding processes, capable of working with aluminum, steel, and stainless steel. This role requires the ability to read and interpret tight tolerance drawings and perform fixturing and setup of parts using precision welding tables. In addition to welding, some assembly work will be required. 

Essential Functions:

  • Supervision: Oversee and manage the daily activities of the weld shop, including scheduling, task assignment, and performance monitoring of welders and fabricators.
  • Quality Control: Ensure all welding and fabrication work meets the required specifications, standards, and quality levels. Conduct regular inspections and audits of welds and fabricated parts.
  • Training and Development: Provide training, guidance, and mentorship to welders and fabricators to enhance their skills and ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Safety Compliance: Enforce safety regulations and protocols within the weld shop. Conduct safety meetings and ensure all team members adhere to safety standards.
  • Process Improvement: Identify areas for improvement in welding and fabrication processes. Implement best practices and innovative solutions to enhance productivity and efficiency.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other departments, including engineering, quality assurance, and production, to ensure seamless workflow and project completion.
  • Inventory Management: Monitor and manage inventory levels of welding materials, tools, and equipment. Ensure timely procurement of necessary supplies.
  • Reporting: Maintain accurate records of production, quality, and safety metrics. Prepare and present reports to management as required. 

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in welding and fabrication, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong foundational knowledge and practical skills in TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) welding processes.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret technical drawings with tight tolerances.
  • Experience with fixturing and setting up parts using precision welding tables.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and team collaboration skills. 

Preferred Additional Skills: 

  • Knowledge of most metal types used for fabrication, including steel, stainless steel, aluminum, Monel, and K500.
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed.
  • Familiarity with military standards and quality requirements.
