Job Description:   

L3Harris Technologies is seeking a Machinist in its Norfolk VA location.  The primary role of a Machinist is to set up and operate manual machines to produce precision parts and instruments. This position involves a variety of manufacturing operations related to the fabrication and machining of precision parts and sheet metal. The Machinist will apply their knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures to ensure high-quality production.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Operate manual machines such as lathes, mills, drills, and machinist hand tools.
  • Understand and operate conversational milling machines and acu-rite digital readouts.
  • Work with various types of materials to produce high-quality products within drawing specifications.
  • Review samples, drawings, or instructions to understand specifications of output.
  • Plan the sequence of necessary actions for the completion of a job.
  • Take measurements and mark material for cutting or shaping.
  • Select appropriate machines (e.g., lathes) and position or load material for the job.
  • Determine and program the size of batches, speed of the machine, etc.
  • Monitor machines while working to adjust the feed, maintain temperature, and identify issues.
  • Check output to ensure consistency with specifications and discard defects.
  • Keep records of approved and defective units or final products.
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and repair minor damages.

 

Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 5 years of proven relevant experience.
  • Experience in using and/or programming manual, semi-automated, or automated tools and machines (lathes, grinders, etc.).
  • Ability to use English and Metric measuring tools (e.g., micrometer, calipers, and associated machinist measuring tools) to take accurate measurements.
  • Knowledge of the properties of metal and other materials.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and manuals and understand tolerances for the fabrication process.
  • Strong math and analytical abilities.

 

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Prototyping experience is a plus
