Job Description:
Responsible for the design, layout, testing and evaluation of mechanical and electro-mechanical devices or systems. Prepares design specifications, analysis and recommendations for presentation and approval. Analyzes mechanical requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints. Investigates solutions to product or process problems. Consolidates results of mechanical design elements for assigned projects. Conducts investigations involving the origination or modification of material, component or process specifications or requirements. Performs product development activities including drawing creation and interpretation/implementation of customer specifications and documentation requirements.
Essential Functions:
- Have compitency in avionics/electronics packaging design, material/process selection for electronic hardware integration and environmental climatic test techniques is highly desirable.
- Proficient completion of verification testing as defined by the mechanical specification and test plan
- Proficiency in design analysis and testing, both structural and thermal, to prove design will meet customer requirements
- Generate and/or process engineering change orders (ECN’s) as required
- Work directly with mechanical designers on CAD models and part documentation
- Proficiennt development, review and approval of engineering documentation, including product specifications, drawings, assembly procedures, and test plans. Perform, guide or review various types of advanced engineering analyses to characterize and validate proposed designs.
- Support the assembly, integration and test of the product or prototype hardware.
- Provide technical leadership and design oversight in support of existing product lines and new development efforts by interacting cross-functionally with various engineering disciplines, operations, supply chain, program management, customer representatives and vendors.
- Interface with mechanical design engineers, manufacturing process engineers and operations personnel to streamline, problem solve and continuously improve product designs.
- Interaction with manufacturing to ensure successful prototype design hand-off and production transition including support of test plans, fixture designs and work instructions.
- Requirements development, coordination and tracking changes to Bill of Materials (BOM) and proper execution of design and analysis tasks in accordance with internal engineering processes and procedures.
- Ability to support proposals, basis of estimate creation and report / track task status, utilizing standard L3H tool set.
Qualifications:
- Requires proficient knowledge of job area. May have practical knowledge of project management. Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Experience with Space Avionics/electronics packaging design, assembly and test is preferred.
- Compitent technical problem solving skills and excellent project management / multi-tasking ability is required.
- Familiarity with ASME Y14.5 drawing standards, fundamental GD&T and dimensional stack-up tolerances, basic machine shop metal working capabilities, common finishes & fabrication methods is required.
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience for design is required (SolidWorks or ANSYS). Proficiency with structural, structural dynamics and/or thermal analyses is preferred. Experience in all is preferred.
- Must be a self-starter, versatile and adept at functioning in either lead or support role in small groups working on fast-paced projects encompassing initial conceptual product design all the way through transition to manufacturing production build. This may include detail design, light assembly, test verification, build support, thorough results documentation and task completion on schedule & within budget constraints.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance
- Experience with CAD tools (Solidworks and NX preferred)
- Experience with FEA tools (e.g. ANSYS Classic/Workbench, Solidworks Simulation Professional)
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Good interpersonal skills, ability to work well with others and establish effective, ongoing relationships throughout the organization
- Prior experience in aerospace and defense.
- Experience with avionics packaging, high vacuum systems, or IR sensor systems packaging
- Compitency with CAD tools (Solidworks and CREO preferred)
- Compitency with FEA tools (e.g. ANSYS Classic/Workbench, NASTRAN/PATRAN, Solidworks Simulation Professional)
