Job Description:


L3Harris Londonderry, a leading designer and manufacturer of night vision, laser and electro-optic products is seeking a motivated Mechanical Engineer to join us in a fast-paced company where new designs become production reality. 
As a member of our product development staff, you will lead and support mechanical teams in the creation of new technology initiatives and advancements. A variety of Mechanical Engineering skills, specifically in the development of high technology weapon-mounted, helmet-mounted and hand-held military products will be required to bring projects from concept to production.  

 

Essential Functions: 


•    Lead and support mechanical design teams in the development of new products
•    Conduct component and system level design trades and analyses
•    Design for harsh MIL-STD environments, including shock/vibe, EMI, extreme temperatures and immersion
•    Design and integration of optical components and subsystems
•    Design electronics packaging of both rigid and flexible circuits and related interconnects
•    Utilize MCAD & PLM tools in the design of mechanical parts, including traditionally-machined, molded plastic and casted metal components
•    Design for manufacturing, assembly, size, weight, and DTUPC project requirements
•    Utilize FEA & CFD tools to perform structural & thermal analysis on components and assemblies 
•    Development of detailed design documentation, utilizing GD&T to ensure proper form/fit/function
•    Perform rapid prototyping and assembly in support of concept demonstration hardware and tooling 
•    Perform mechanical design verification testing and support qualification testing
•    Lead and support root cause corrective action (RCCA) teams in the resolution of technical issues
•    Transition to production of new designs and technologies
•    Support sustaining mechanical engineering for qualified production designs

 

Qualifications:


•    Bachelor's Degree with 9 years prior experience, Graduate Degree with 7 years prior experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience.
 

Preferred Additional Skills:


•    Experience developing engineering hardware within the defense, aerospace, or medical product fields
•    Experience with MCAD/PLM: Siemens NX, Teamcenter, FEA/CFD: Siemens NX, NASTRAN 
•    Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) aligned with latest ASME Y14.5 standard
•    Knowledge of molded plastic design, materials, adhesives and DFMA
•    Experience with advanced manufacturing and assembly methods including plastic injection molding, ultrasonic welding, heat staking, robotic epoxy dispensing, etc.
•    Experience with task scoping, prioritization, and execution to project schedules
•    Experience with SOPs, process control and standardization of work output
•    Experience supporting high volume production sustainment efforts, including RCCA and coordination between operations, supply chain and external vendors.
