Job Description:
We are seeking a Senior Specialist, Quality Engineering (NDT) to join our state‑of‑the‑art Advanced Manufacturing Facility (AMF) in Huntsville, AL, which serves as our inert manufacturing facility for the fabrication and assembly of composite rocket motor hardware. The work schedule will be driven by unit operation requirements and will follow a 9/80 schedule.
The Quality Engineer / NDT Level III is responsible for developing, implementing, maintaining, and improving quality assurance processes and nondestructive testing (NDT) programs to ensure compliance with customer, contractual, regulatory, and internal requirements. This position serves as the designated NDT Level III authority for applicable methods and provides technical leadership in inspection processes, procedure development, personnel qualification, and quality issue resolution. The role works cross‑functionally with engineering, manufacturing, operations, suppliers, and customers to ensure product integrity, support production, and drive continuous improvement.
Essential Functions:
• Serve as the responsible Level III in accordance with applicable standards, company procedures, and customer requirements.
• Develop, qualify, approve, and maintain NDT procedures, techniques, and work instructions for applicable inspection methods.
• Interpret applicable codes, standards, specifications, and contractual requirements related to NDT.
• Provide technical oversight of NDT operations to ensure inspections are performed correctly and consistently.
• Establish and administer training, qualification, and certification programs for NDT personnel in accordance with governing requirements.
• Review and approve NDT techniques, examination methods, and acceptance criteria.
• Support the selection, qualification, and control of NDT equipment, materials, and consumables.
• Evaluate NDT indications and provide technical guidance on interpretation and disposition, as required.
• Conduct audits and assessments of internal and supplier NDT processes to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
• Support customer, regulatory, and internal audits involving NDT processes and certifications.
• Maintain NDT certification records, written practices, vision records, and related compliance documentation.
• Provide technical consultation to engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams regarding NDT capabilities, limitations, and applications.
• Assist with new product introduction, process changes, and production transfers involving NDT requirements.
Qualifications:
May possess broad knowledge of project management.
Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 6 years of prior relevant experience; or a Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of related experience; or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.
Current or previously certified NDT Level III in one or more of the following methods:
Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
Digital Radiography (DR)
Radiographic Testing (RT)
Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)
Eddy Current Testing (ET)
Visual Testing (VT)
Strong knowledge of quality systems, inspection methods, and process control techniques.
Preferred Additional Skills:
• Experience working to standards such as ASNT, NAS 410, AWS, ASME, ASTM, or other applicable customer/regulatory requirements.
• Certification and experience in multiple NDT methods.
• Knowledge of AS9100, ISO 9001, or equivalent quality management systems.
• Experience with FAI, SPC, PFMEA, control plans, 8D, 5 Why, or Six Sigma methodologies.
