Job Description:

 

L3Harris is seeking a Senior Specialist, Materials & Process Engineer with metallurgical engineering experience to support critical Defense products for legacy Production programs and current Engineering and Manufacturing Development programs.

 

Essential Functions:

 

Under limited general supervision of the Materials and Process Engineering technical leadership team and/or Program Chief Engineer, apply knowledge of engineering and scientific principles to resolve metallurgical materials related issues, utilize six sigma techniques, lean manufacturing process knowledge and sound decision-making principles to perform the following duties:

  • Utilize steel metallurgy and thermal processing fundamentals to support steel rocket motor case processing, qualification and product acceptance.
  • Analyze a wide range of metal characteristics such as grain size, structure and phases, presence and types of intermetallic compounds, as well as defects related to manufacturing in accordance with drawing/specification requirements.
  • Responsible for collaborating with project engineers on supplier process development and demonstrate the capability to conduct failure analyses linked to materials and thermal processing issues.
  • Develop, modify, improve and troubleshoot processes associated with the fabrication of steel motor cases in all stages of the production process.
  • Support design process by providing material selection recommendations, creating material specifications, reviewing design drawings, reviewing manufacturing planning, providing supplier technical support and supporting Engineering Review Boards, Process Change Boards, Failure Review Boards customer technical interchange meetings.
  • This position may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
  • Travel: 25%.
  • Ability to obtain a US Security Clearance.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 6 years of prior Metallurgical/Materials experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior Metallurgical/Materials experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior Metallurgical/Materials experience.

Preferred Additional Skills:

 

  • Bachelor's in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science is preferred.
  • Master's degree in one of the above disciplines is preferred.
  • Strong communication, technical presentation, teamwork, and Microsoft Office skills is preferred.
