Job Description:
This Scientist, Mechanical Engineering role is a subject matter expert-level mechanical design engineering role focused on the design of filament-wound composite cases for Solid Propulsion and Controllable Solids Systems. The position requires substantial technical expertise in the area of carbon fiber epoxy material systems, pressure vessel design, filament winding manufacturing, and Classical Lamination Theory. Operating under consultative direction, the role is responsible for defining objectives, determining technical approaches, delegating tasks, reviewing deliverables, and coaching and training other employees across the company within area of expertise. The selected candidate will provide technical leadership in the component and system design of composite cases for solid propellant and controllable solid propulsion applications.
Essential Functions:
- Ability to obtain a U.S. Secret Security Clearance.
- Lead mechanical design efforts for filament-wound composite cases and solid propulsion systems and components.
- Independently develop design concepts, 3D models, and detailed engineering drawings.
- Perform trade studies and develop component specifications and procedures as required.
- Coordinate with component analysis, manufacturing, project engineering, quality, and customer support teams.
- Plan and execute design assignments with limited direction in an Integrated Product Team (IPT) environment.
- Support shop floor and production hardware processing activities both internally and at supplier locations.
- Provide technical input on nonconforming hardware, process planning, production meetings, and supply chain coordination to ensure design requirements are achieved.
- Support engineering drawing and specification updates through configuration change boards.
- Develop test plans and lead technical reviews.
- Assist in identifying and supporting risk-reduction efforts and environmental test requirements, including manufacturing pathfinders, subscale testing, and component- and system-level qualification testing.
- Communicate effectively within and outside the organization, including with major customers and vendors.
- Serve as a recognized internal expert and thought leader in the area of expertise.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 12 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 16 years of prior related experience.
- Experience in filament wound composite pressure vessel design and manufacturing methods.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering is preferred.
- Knowledge of solid propulsion systems design and manufacturing methods.
- Knowledge and experience in strategic booster motors, tactical rocket motors, controllable solids systems.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and experience with CAD software tools (CREO), and PLM Systems (Windchill), engineering drawing and GD&T application experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
