Job Description:
The Aerojet Rocketdyne Business Segment of L3Harris is seeking a Materials Laboratory Engineer to join our Huntsville, Alabama facility.
This position will work in the Advanced Manufacturing Facility’s (AMF) Materials and Process Engineering (M&PE) Laboratory in Huntsville, Al. The primary responsibility will be to perform and coordinate testing for material characterization/development, failure investigations, and other support of the M&PE team. This position will also support material recertification and in-process testing of materials as required. This position will report to the Materials and Processes Engineering AMF Laboratory Manager in Huntsville, AL.
Essential Functions:
- Complete M&PE testing projects safely and on time by coordinating department resources and communicating with other enterprise teams.
- Present results of M&PE testing projects to internal customers.
- Coordinate project scope, timelines, and testing with the work requestor.
- Maintain current engineering project workload status. Present information in daily department tag-ups and periodically to engineering team.
- Provide mentorship to more junior engineers and technicians
- Test non-metallic materials using a variety of measurement instruments and equipment such as balances, universal testing machines, ovens, hotplates, hydraulic presses, autoclaves, and SEM.
- Fabricate, cure, and inspect non-metallic materials (carbon/epoxy, glass/epoxy, carbon/phenolic and EPDM) test panels as needed.
- Conduct testing according to ASTM/MIL/ISO etc standards, standard work documents, and custom work requests.
- Generate lab reports according to material specification requirements, performing calculations as required.
- Contribute to overall lab operations and continuous improvement
- Maintain laboratory readiness and cleanliness through 5S+1.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
- 4 years’ experience in a laboratory environment.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or appropriate discipline is preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of non-metallic materials properties is preferred.
- Hands-on experience with mechanical testing of non-metallic materials is preferred.
- Experience with any of the following test equipment:
- Instron Universal Testing Frame
- Moving Die Rheometer and Mooney Viscometer
- Scanning Electron Microscopy
- Hydraulic Press and Autoclave
- Understanding of composite and polymeric materials concepts.
