Job Description:
L3Harris is seeking a qualified individual to join our Aeronautical Systems Engineering team as a Mass Properties Engineer. Mass Properties Engineers perform mass properties analyses, weight control, and report for major aircraft modifications using computer aided design (CAD) tools and Microsoft Excel. You will also support the development of engineering estimates for bids and provide input to a regular labor forecast for your team. Mass Properties Engineers can work on a wide variety of tasks and aircraft modifications on various aircraft platforms.
Essential Functions:
- Calculate and estimate component weights, moment arms, and mass moment of inertia from engineering drawings and CAD models.
- Calculate overall aircraft weight and balance because of a collection of modifications.
- Developing aircraft mass distributions in support of loads development.
- Manage weight control plans, including allocation and tracking of target weights.
- Prepare aircraft weight charts and support aircraft inventories for weighing.
- Document weight analysis and actual aircraft weighing in engineering reports.
- Lead and coordinate tasks for Mass Properties on several contracts.
- Estimate the scope and labor hours for Mass Properties’ efforts on new pursuits.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Must be able to travel to and from flight line and work in aircraft hangar environments. (some positions will require the ability to board/exit aircraft)
- Willingness to travel.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoW Secret Clearance.
- Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree with two (2) years of Mass Properties experience.
- Graduate Degree with zero (0) to two (2) years of Mass Properties experience.
- In lieu of a degree, minimum of six (6) years of Mass Properties experience.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Active Secret Clearance.
- Understanding of FAA and military weight and balance reporting requirements and methods.
- Advanced skill in managing large data sets in Microsoft Excel.
- Automated Weight and Balance System (AWBS) software.
- Experience with aircraft weighing.
