Job Description: L3Harris has an immediate need for a Photonics Engineering Specialist to join our talented team and support our customers. We are seeking a technical professional to help build, integrate, and test photonic components into larger system assemblies, and provide essential engineering support. This is an on-site position supporting precision lab work at our Sterling, VA location. We look forward to reviewing your application!
Essential Functions:
• Perform fabrication, assembly, integration, test, or inspection processes in accordance with detailed work instructions and drawings, such as:
o Optical Fiber Splicing and Recoating
o Fabrication, assembly, and inspection of photonic circuits
o Mechanical Builds and Assemblies
o Metal Soldering
o Microscopy and Profilometry
• Communicate regularly with management to ensure team is meeting expectations for cost, schedule, and quality.
• Ensure preventative maintenance is performed regularly in accordance with documentation and provide support and content towards future document revisions.
• Maintain and operate wire bonding, photomasking, epoxy application, and other systems commonly used for optical device fabrication.
• Maintain high standard for cleanliness, workspace organization, and reliability.
• Develop and implement engineering solutions to support production and R&D efforts.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members.
Qualifications:
• Requires a Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience, or Graduate Degree or equivalent with 0 to 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 6 years of prior related experience.
• Experience operating electrical, electro-optical, or photonic equipment or instrumentation.
• US Citizen with an active TS/SCI clearance with Poly.
Preferred Additional Skills:
• Experience with optical fiber handling, components, terminations, and measurements
• Experience operating EO equipment (e.g. OSA, Power Meter, OBRs, BeamScan, MFD (Spiricon), Oscilloscopes, multi wavelength laser sources, etc.) and utilizing recipes across different devices/programs
• Experience with machining parts using standard tooling and shop equipment along with a basic understanding of shop math – e.g. ratios, graphs, algebra, and geometry
• Experience with alignment, testing, and inspection of precision optical systems
• Experience with optical microscopy and metrology
