We’re looking for a sharp, strategic Systems Engineering Manager to lead and scale out growing team – drive innovation, streamline complexity and shape the future of our capabilities. You’ll bring proven leadership, deep systems engineering expertise, and hands-on experience delivering complex, cross-functional projects.

What the role will involve

The responsibilities of your role will include the following:

 

Management:

  • Ensure Applications Systems Engineering staff are enabled to execute their roles effectively and efficiently;
  • Carry out annual performance reviews for staff;
  • Carry out resource matrix management for Applications Systems Engineers deployed across multiple projects, manage demand across projects, review workforce planning and carry out recruitment activities to meet business needs;
  • Support the development of Applications Systems Engineering capability within the company (process and tools);
  • Monitor adherence to, and review training needs, with respect to corporate and local engineering processes;
  • Work with programme Project Management to ensure delivery to cost and schedule;
  • Report internally on technical aspects of Design Specification development;
  • Interface with programme customer on technical aspects of Design Specification development.
  • Requirements Engineering:
  • Definition and management of subsystem level requirements;
  • Management of Verification and Validation (V&V) evidence and understand the importance of traceability to customer requirements;
  • Reviewing and communicating the impact of changes to the technical baseline;
  • Support lower-level decomposition of requirements traceable to customer requirements;
  • Produce/lead/review production of subsystem Design Specifications.

Engineering Process:

  • Experienced in design and review processes;
  • Experience of managing technical queries, risk and the engineering change management process;
  • Collaborate with other business functions to produce and review engineering work packages and associated work breakdown structures;
  • Support engineering initiatives to improve engineering quality and adherence to engineering process.

Other:

  • Support design reviews and workshops to gain acceptance of the company designs from customer and project team stakeholders;
  • To capture voids in designs and present these to stakeholders;
  • Other ad hoc tasks as agreed with the line manager or work package lead;
  • Provide technical representation for the company to customers and suppliers and deputise for the technical manager(s) on occasions, where appropriate.

What you’ll bring

The role requires the following experience and skills:

 

  • Equivalent of Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience. Post Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience working on complex engineering projects;
  • Excellent understanding of systems concepts, context, boundaries, interfaces, system hierarchy and the principles of system partitioning in order to help manage complexity.
  • Excellent planning, communications, and co-ordination skills;
  • Excellent IT skills (Experience with DOORS is essential; System Architect or Rhapsody would be beneficial);
  • Understands the characteristics of good quality requirements, elicitation methods and tools;
  • Excellent understanding of development of Design Specifications;
  • Good understanding of requirements engineering within Defence Projects;
  • Good Knowledge of Marine Engineering or in Plant Processes and Control Systems;
  • Good knowledge of Systems Design methodologies;
  • Able to understand detail and a low level of fidelity in technical decision making.
  • Good understanding of requirements engineering within Defence Projects – preferred
