Job Title: Senior Associate Mechanical Engineer

Job Number: 36757

Job Location: Amityville, NY

Job Schedule: 9/80

Job Description:

L3Harris Stress engineers will review and interpret the mechanical environmental conditions provided in the statement of work and the technical performance specification as it applies to the equipment being developed under the program. Internal loads that will size the equipment to meet the program technical requirements will be developed based on the externally applied acceleration, vibration, shock, and other dynamic loads. The appropriate factors of safety will be applied when writing yield and ultimate margins of safety to demonstrate structural integrity and considering temperature effects on material properties and strength allowables.

Stress engineers are responsible for achieving a compliant design which will meet all program environmental requirements and demonstrated by successfully passing qualification testing. This will be accomplished by conducting hand calculations based on strength of materials and structural mechanics theory. Finite element analysis (FEA), using Ansys, will be employed when conducting structural dynamic analysis of complex geometry individual parts and/or multi-body assemblies.

Demonstrating good FEA practices are key. Being able to optimize geometry and meshes is a key skill. Multi-part assemblies are modelled while considering the interaction of parts. These interactions can be contacts, joints, beams, or constraint equations based on the requirement of the interaction and the fidelity of the result needed in the area.

Stress engineers are also required to analyze structural and thermal loads on electronic assemblies consisting of Circuit Card Assemblies (CCAs). Margins will be written on the structures and on the junction temperatures of electronic components. Experience with Icepak or a similar CCA modeling tool is preferred, but not required.

Stress engineers are required to use computer aided solid modeling design tools to ensure that the as-designed geometry is the geometry analyzed. They are responsible for interacting with the integrated product development team. They are also required to support testing (test setups, monitor the test, analyze the data) and be able to correlate their results to the test results.

Communication skills consisting of giving presentations and documenting analysis results in a report in a PowerPoint or Word document format are required. This also includes being able to estimate time and schedule for a given assignment and being able to mentor young engineers to build their knowledge.

Essential Functions:

  • Finite Element Analysis
    • Ansys Mechanical
      • Static, random vibration, shock, thermal, transient load conditions
    • LS-Dyna or ADAMs
    • Icepak
  • CAD proficiency
  • Ability to work to assigned schedules
  • Eligible to obtain a security clearance, although not required for employment consideration.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of  2 years of prior related experience.
  • Graduate Degree or equivalent with 0 to 2 years of prior related experience.
  • In lieu of a degree, minimum of 6 years of prior related experience.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Non-linear structural analysis
  • CFD
  • Communication (written and oral)
  • Microsoft office tools

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Washington, and the Greater D.C, Denver, or NYC areas is Min $76,500.00 - $141,500.00 Max. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location. L3Harris also offers a variety of benefits, including health and disability insurance, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, EAP, education assistance, parental leave,
paid time off, and company-paid holidays. The specific programs and options available to an employee may vary depending on date of hire, schedule type, and the applicability of collective bargaining agreements.
